Background: The mother and baby are always considered to be a single unit. Globally,
neonatal mortality declined from 4.7 million in 990 (33 deaths per 1000 live births) to 2.8
million in 2013 (20 deaths per 1000 live births). However, there are significant variations in
mortality rates among Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions, which have been
documented. It is an important responsibility of the health care workers involved in newborn
care to provide research inputs that will strengthen and support the Government
efforts.
